Questionnaire results

I was a able to succesfully distribute 20 copies of my magazine questionnaire to participants
of a different age ranges and backgrounds. Below i have created Pie charts using the software Microsoft Excel to visually represent my results from each question and the conclusions i can draw from them.

1. What age category do you fall into?

I am able to conclude from this piece of data that the majority of magazine audiences are aged within the age range of 14 to 17 and 18 to 20. I can take and use this information to ensure that my music magazine appeals towards these age ranges.

2. What would be your favourite kind of magazine to read?

As shown in the green section of this graph Music magazines are dominant over other magazines in the results from my questionnaire, this means that i have a large group of people who may be able to offer feedback and opinions on my main task down the line.

3. When listening to music what is your favourite genre to listen to?

Rock was shown here to be the dominant genre of music that people listen to, closely followed by Dubstep. I feel that this information is invaluable to me as i can ensure that my music magazine is based on the rock genre to appeal to a larger audience, i could possibly attempt to tie in dubstep with the rock aswell as alot of rock songs these days are being remixed intop dubstep so i have a large array of options.

4. Do you currently purchase a music magazine?

This is helpful for th next question which follows on from this question.

5. If yes how frequently do you purchase it?

I placed this question into the questionnaire as i felt it was a useful bit of information to look at when placing dates and references to the issue releases in my main task. Looking at this graph i think its conclusive that the majority of people that buy music magazines buy them on a weekly basis, therefore i will have my magazine as a weekly issue.

6. If you were to purchase a music magazine what content would you like to see inside?

This pie chart shows that the majority of the people taking my questionnaire would like to see some form of interview or review within its pages, so i could create my double page spread as one of these. The other close option was the 'Other' option in which all 3 of the people that selected this said that they would like to see something along the lines of a competition in the magazine.

7. How much would you be willing to pay for a good music magazine?
And this pie chart has easily made up my mind on the pricing to be placed on my front cover, Over 50% of the people asked this question have said that they would happily pay £2.99 for a good magazine, therefore i will price my magazine at £2.99.

Questionnaire

Right the time has come to start looking at my main task in creating a music magazine; to begin with I am going to need to gather information on the preferences of others when looking at a music magazine so that i have a visual aid and so general knowledge of what people look for in a successful music magazine. So i have devised my own questionnaire that i will distribute to a number of people of varying ages so that i may gather some resourceful information for my magazine production.  Below you can view a sample of my questionnaire that i will distribute.

Magazine comparison

The purpose of a magazine cover is to lure potential customers into the depths of its pages with flashy images and intriguing cover lines. The bold lettering and piercing stares of the photos reach out and rip people’s attention away from the carton of milk they originally came to buy. At this point it is already too late for the customers; within the vast magazine shelf one will call out to the customer’s personal interests...  they will have to leave with that magazine. But why does the magazine shelf hold such a variety that could turn anybody’s attention?  It is because magazine institutions know exactly how to target their audiences through a front page. They combine images of relevance to the subject matter of the magazine and place promises of exciting stories within its pages. Then, while queuing up to purchase something, the image will stand out within the corner of their eye and trigger a response either to their favourite rock star, sport, actor/model etc.  For example if I was a major fishing enthusiast I would notice a lovely picture of a whopping great fish and think to myself - ‘wow I really like catching whopping great fish’  and through that common interest I would inevitably scan through the pages and most likely purchase that magazine.  I will be comparing the two music magazine covers shown above, by writing about the similarities between them and the subtle differences which could sway a customer towards one or the other.
Both magazines display a similar variety of colours. The common colour pattern I first notice is the use of light blue, red and black. However the ‘Q’ magazine is bolder with the use of red especially within its Masthead while as the ‘Rolling stone’ magazine goes for a gentler blue. The comparison of colours between the two mastheads sends out completely different messages to me about the contents of the magazine. For instance the ‘Rolling stone’ masthead uses a gentle light blue colour which to me, gives quite a calm and relaxed appearance however the ‘Q’s red appearance gives of more of an explosive and an in your face kind of reaction. I would expect to have a more sophisticated form of musical information within the rolling stones magazine whereas within the Q magazine I would expect to read more exciting and rock related articles.  The choice of these 3 main colours between them may show that both are commonly linked to the same theme, however through the two different masthead colours I feel I could say that they are attempting to reach out to different kinds of target audience even though they are both reviewing music.  The Q magazine may be attempting to draw in the simpler range of audience who will take music as something they enjoy listening to whereas I believe the rolling stone magazine may be targeting a more, musically educated audience who will enjoy a more sophisticated interpretation of an artist and their music.
The images on a cover hold just as much importance to the selling of that magazine as the colourings. The front cover of the Q magazine demonstrates a rather provocative image of the ever-gorgeous Lily Allen with a black panther either side of her while the front covers main graphic of the rolling stone magazine shows a very elaborate image of popular rapper, Jay Z.  For starters, like the mastheads both magazines blast out an impression of what to expect within its pages, for instance the two black panthers on the Q magazine hold multiple impressions on the reader. They may be used to show the wildness of Lily Allen, the bestial side to her and also the wildness of the magazine itself.  The symbolism of a panther can also be linked to glamour, sex and sin – the perfect mixture for an interesting rock magazine.  Rolling stone however have chosen to have Jay-z well groomed and looking particularly smart wearing a suit, once again providing an insight into the more intelligent articles held within the pages and connecting with the sophisticated target audience.  The image itself may, much like Q, symbolise glamour which I believe is one of the main factors of any music magazine. Glamour is what will make us ‘ordinary’ folk admire the people staring up at us and will inspire us to read of their success and achievements in the music industry. The Voluptuous image of a topless Lily Allen may have a negative effect on a possible audience. Although the image reveals nothing more but her back, she is holding a very seductive body composition- hip pushed out, biting of finger, knees close together, skin tight clothing and back slightly arched as if close to giving away a view of the front of her body. This to some viewers may be considered as sleazy and/or disrespectful and almost certainly appeals more so towards the male population, this could deter people away from buying that issue whereas the rolling stone’s image of Jay-z can be viewed equally by all audiences and interpreted generally as equally.
The title for the Q magazine ‘Sexy Beast LILY ALLEN’ instantaneously demonstrates the subject of the image is to express the figure and attractiveness of lily Allen. The use of sexy beast’ can also relate to the panthers being placed next to her in an effort to emphasise the ‘Beast’ within the statement. The word sexy in itself may also be interpreted as quite a raunchy way of saying someone is attractive or beautiful, and the word itself gives more of an edge to the statement when reading out loud. I believe that the word sexy may also, in my opinion be more relative to the body/figure of a person whereas beautiful would be more specifically linked to the facial features of a person, so I believe they have used ‘sexy’ perfectly in emphasising the appealing physique of Lilly Allen. Rolling stone have gone for a more intriguing title with ‘JAY-Z, addicted to the game’, this, along with the image does not give too much of the story away, it draws you in through the secrecy and natural curiosity generated within us after reading that short clipping. Many questions are raised within the reader after viewing such as ‘is he addicted to a literal game or do they mean rap?’ ‘Why is he addicted to it?’ – These niggling little questions will be what will drive us to buy the magazine there and then just so we can have our ‘implanted’ questions answered.
Personally I feel these front covers work exceptionally well for their own target audiences, Q magazine for the more open, wild and glamour based fans and rolling stone for its musically educated, sophisticated and more relaxed audience. They both stand out and capture the attention of readers suddenly with their bold colours, titles and large pictures. If it were not for my extreme infatuation over Lilly Allen I would honestly be able to say I would not be able to choose which one to buy as they both sell themselves to me exceptionally well.

Preliminary task evaluation

Finally my preliminary task has been completed, it has taken various numbers of sleepless night, blood, sweat and tears in order to complete this and I can honestly say I have never been so proud to look at a school magazine in my life.  I take my hat off to the writers of my old school newsletters and it is with great waves of guilt that I say I am sorry for throwing away all of your hard work without at least honouring  it with a skim read.  I never realised it was quite this difficult , one of my main difficulties i encountered while taking part in this task was trying to make the content both interesting for parents and pupils. Part of me was looking back at when i was in school and trying to imagine what I and my parents would both find interesting and school related...I would come back with absolutely nothing! So instead of making the individual articles interesting for both adults and children I decided to try and make a balance of articles, some that parents would be more interested in and some that the pupils would be more interested in. So within the contents page I have a variety of different articles that would appeal to one or the other of age ranges. The front page has a more formal article from the headmaster more aimed at the parents and then there is a sports article praising a pair of students which I feel is more aimed at pupils due to the inclusion of fellow students within the article. I also had slight difficulty when trying to make it more creative or unique through the use of Microsoft publisher, I feel the program is very bland and has limited tools for creative use.  It is helpful for structuring etc as it offers a wide variety of text boxes and guidelines for me to position wherever I feel necessary however I think for my main task i will make an attempt to use another program such as ‘Plasq’s Comic Life’ in an attempt to make it more eccentric and colourful.  Something that I did find easy during the task was deciding on the layout of the both the pages, at first I believed it would be difficult to decide how i want the front and contents pages to be laid out however after looking at other school’s magazines i was able to make a decision on how exactly I wanted the pages to be laid out, and I stuck to that mental layout throughout.
I feel that my research into other school magazines was very limited however. In hindsight I don’t think I would have had to spend vast amounts of time trying to decide on appropriate articles for both audiences if i had spent a little bit more time on how other successful school magazines were able to achieve this. Instead I looked closely at the layout and only the layouts.  I feel that next time I will spend a lot more time and energy on the analysis of appropriate magazines and their techniques and content to ensure that I can take and combine ideas to get the most out of my magazine.
I used various tactics when making my school magazine in an effort to attract both audiences of pupils and adults. For starters i ensured that the logo was clear and bold on my front cover so that just a quick glance at it on the family coffee table or poking out of the pupils bag will allow the audience to realise that it is a letter from school and may peak curiosity. I have then ensured that the headlines are bold and in the case of the boxing headline i have made sure that it is colourful to make it stand out and jump from the pages at the audience.  I also did not want to have a ridiculously long article on the front page as i feel that may deter people from attempting to read it if there is just a vast amount of words plastered onto the front page, so instead of having the full headmasters article I have placed a note at the end of it saying continued further on so that if the audience wishes to continue reading they will be more inclined to open the magazine to read more.
As mentioned previously i feel i would like to use a different program when performing the main task for the sole reason that i felt Microsoft Publisher really lacked in creative options.  It appears to be very set in stone that it is for business use, it does have a lot of helpful utilities such as ideas and help when setting a layout however I do not think that there is an awful lot of experimental work you can do with the program. next time around i will definitely be using Plasq’s comic life for the majority of the work, i had a quick play around with the functions towards the end of the task and i feel it holds alot of potential for inputting my own creativity into the work. It offers a vast array of eccentric lettering and colours for my text and also offers a number photo editing options and effects to get the most out of my images.
If I have learnt anything from this task it’s that I should spend a lot more time in researching similar magazines in order to further increase the amounts of ideas that I have to play with. By placing more time into research i feel it will save me a lot more time in trying to come up with imaginative ideas on my own.
